A postdoctoral position is available to study the structure of diverse
drug targets in the laboratory of Dr. Barry Finzel in Department of
Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus.
Current research in the Finzel laboratory includes a diverse portfolio
of targets addressing antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and
anti-cancer therapeutic needs.

This is a two-year post-graduate entry-level appointment in which the
individual will be responsible for carrying out specific aims of
research under limited supervision, as well as initiating independent
research projects when appropriate. The successful candidate will
perform experiments to identify small molecule modulators of the
activity of medicinally important proteins, provide crystallographic
characterization of bound ligands, and engage in comprehensive efforts
in structure-based design to optimize small-molecule inhibitors with
potential as research probes or drugs. Active participation in
fragment or high-throughput screening to identify and develop lead
compounds for synthetic elaboration is envisioned.

We collaborate extensively with scientists in the College of
Pharmacy’s Institute for Therapeutic Discovery & Development, and are
participating investigators within the Minnesota Supercomputing
Institute. The successful candidate will have ample opportunity to
interact with synthetic medicinal chemists, biologists, and
pharmaceutical scientists in the College of Pharmacy to gain
experience with the critical scientific activities of an effective
multi-disciplinary drug discovery team.

Qualified candidates should have a PhD or equivalent degree in
Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field with practical experience in
protein crystallography.

The position will entail the cloning, purification and crystallization
of recombinant proteins, macromolecular crystallography, computational
modeling and molecular design. Experience in recombinant DNA
technology, large-scale purification of proteins, or enzymology is
highly desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
are required.
