An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is immediately available to develop
new computational tools for accelerating X-ray crystallographic
studies. Joining the Computational Crystallography Initiative, which
develops the structure solution package PHENIX
(http://phenix-online.org/), the postdoctoral researcher will focus on
high-throughput methods for beamline data collection (see
http://cci.lbl.gov/labelit). Methods will be tested and put into
practice in collaboration with the Berkeley Center for Structural
Biology (http://bcsb.lbl.gov/), which operates five macromolecular
beamlines at the Advanced Light Source of LBNL. The successful
candidate has the opportunity to participate in the future of
crystallography, enabling cutting edge work on large, challenging
molecular projects such as viruses and ribosomes.



*Key Responsibilities:* The post doc will apply key
technologies---robotic control, remote access, and automated
scripting---to improve the protocols for the discovery of molecular
structure. New tools for real-time data processing will be designed,
and existing ones (e.g., Web-Ice and XIA2) incorporated where possible.
Interaction with synchrotron beamline users will help to define the
computational issues, leading to a final software product that is
general enough to be deployed both at ALS and at collaborating beamline
facilities at SSRL and APS. The objective is to develop software that
is user-friendly, well-documented, maintainable, extendable and validated.

*Qualifications: *Significant Linux/UNIX programming experience in Java,
C++ and/or Python is required in addition to having a strong
computational background. Experience with computer graphics, database
development, networking protocols and the proven ability to organize
software development projects is important. Must be familiar with
techniques for macromolecular structure solution and/or other automated
data acquisition environments, and have excellent verbal and written
communications skills. A Ph.D. in Biological Science, Computer Science,
or a related field within the last three years is essential.

Notes: There will be occasional travel to scientific conferences and
collaboration sites. Weekend and after hours work may be necessary, on
occasion.
