In the 20 or so minutes I've been back up, I have noticed all of the problems I can remember to be solved, including the associated problems with Kay's email. I seem to remember a myriad of problems correlated in time with a security update I performed last fall. The netinfo database might have been a casualty. Thank you for the replies. They were helpful in my solving this problem and preserving my faith (pun only partially intended) in Macs.
