Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Membrane Structural and Functional Biology

University of Limerick, Ireland

The University of Limerick would like to invite applications for the post of Research Fellow in the Membrane Structural and Functional Biology Research Group. The major theme within the Group is structure and function of membrane proteins by crystallographic means. A project is underway using recombinant techniques to overproduce and to solve the atomic-resolution structure of a number of membrane proteins from Pseudomonas aeruginosa implicated in the control of quorum sensing and biofilm formation. The goal of the project is to use the structural information to understand how quorum sensing works at a molecular level and to assist in the design of new and improved drugs that block quorum sensing.

An exciting postdoctoral research position is available in the Group to work on this project. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with experience in biochemistry and molecular biology to join our multidisciplinary team at the University of Limerick in a lab that offers superb facilities. Individuals interested in moving into the membrane protein field are encouraged to apply.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology or a related field. Demonstrated success in all aspects of molecular biology, recombinant protein production, purification, and functional characterization is required. Experience with membrane protein over-expression, crystallization, and structure-function studies is desirable. The candidate should be a highly motivated individual who enjoys working as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team. Strong leadership, communication and teaching skills are decided assets.

Funding is through Science Foundation Ireland and the USA National Institutes of Health.

Informal enquiries about the post may be directed to: Prof. Martin Caffrey, Membrane Structural and Functional Biology Group. Phone: +353-61-234174. E-mail: martin.caffrey@ul.ie

The salary range for the position is €33,541 - €41,956 per annum. The contract period is for a minimum of 2 years.

Applicants should send a letter of application and a CV with a list of publications and the names of three referees by e-mail to martin.caffrey@ul.ie or by post to:
