positions in the institute as soon as possible:

1. Leader of the group "Recombinant production of viral proteins"
(limited to 2 years, extendable up to 6 years)
2. Postdoctoral fellow in structural biology/X-ray crystallography
(limited to 2 years, extendable up to 4 years)
3. Postdoctoral fellow in crystallography/structural virology
(limited to 18 months)
4. Physicist or physical chemist for systematic investigations into
macromolecular crystallogenesis (limited to 32 months)
5. PhD student in structural virology (limited to 2 years, with
possible 1-year extension)
6. PhD student in drug design and synthetic chemistry (limited to 2
years, with possible 1-year extension)
7. PhD student in proteomics and structural biology with bacterial
virulence proteins (limited to 2 years, with possible 1-year extension)

The positions will be paid according to group E 13 (TV-L). Candidates
filling positions 1 and 2 will be involved in teaching students of
medicine for up to 4 hours/week (German language). The PhD students may
be asked to participate in teaching (to a minor extent) in our
"Molecular Life Science" or "Computational Life Science" programmes (in
English or German). Position no. 4 and one of the positions 5-7 will be
primarily located at our Hamburg outstation.

The Institute of Biochemistry conducts research on the molecular basis
of intracellular infections by RNA viruses (particularly coronaviruses
including the SARS virus), bacteria and protozoa (see EMBO J. 21, 3213
(2002); Science 300, 1763 (2003); PNAS 100, 13190 (2003); Cell 117, 57
(2004); JMB 354, 25 (2005); JBC 281, 25425 (2006)). Investigations
include the identification of potential virulence proteins by
proteomics, the recombinant production, purification, crystallization,
and X-ray structure determination of these proteins, as well as the
design and chemical synthesis of inhibitors. All instrumentation
necessary for this research is implemented in the institute, which also
runs an outstation at DESY (Hamburg) with direct access to synchrotron
radiation. The research projects are mainly funded by the European
Commission (see www.sepsda.eu; www.vizier-europe.org;
www.opticryst.info), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and the
German-Israeli Foundation.

The institute is responsible for education and training in biochemistry,
with an annual enrolment of about 180 students of medicine and up to 80
students of Molecular Life Science or Computational Life Science. Please
