NE-CAT Beamline Technician

The incumbent will provide technical support to NE-CAT’s synchrotron
X-ray beamline program located at the Advanced Photon Source facility
within Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois. The
incumbent will participate initially in the maintenance,
installation, and upgrading of X-ray optical and electronic
components used on NE-CAT’s synchrotron X-ray beamlines. The support
activities will require occasional evening and weekend work, shared
with other staff members, since the beamlines are in continual 24
hour a day operation. With additional successful development and
experience, the incumbent’s duties are expected to expand to
operation of the beamlines and guiding users on use of the beamlines.
The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the NE-CAT
Deputy Director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Requirements

Considerable skill and hands on experience is required with the
installation, operation, maintenance, and upgrading of a variety of
optical and electronic instruments - ideally with synchrotron X-ray
instrumentation. Specific knowledge of vacuum and cryogenic equipment
and operation of machine shop tools is highly desirable. The
applicant should have good computer skills and good knowledge of the
use of generally available Windows and Linux software. Applicants
must have strong interpersonal relationship skills in working closely
and successfully with diverse groups of users and staff members as
well as good communication skills, both oral and written. This level
of knowledge and skills is usually acquired at a BS degree level in
Biology, Physics, Engineering, or Electronics and more than 2 years
of directly relevant additional experience.

For more information about NE-CAT, please see our website, http://
necat.chem.cornell.edu. Candidates should forward a cover letter with
curriculum vita, copies of relevant publications, and contact
information for three references to NE-CAT Director Prof. Steven E.
Ealick (see3@cornell.edu). Applications will be accepted until the
position is filled. Cornell is an equal opportunity, affirmative
action educator and employer.
