A position is available to work on the structural and functional studies
of prokaryotic transcription machinery using X-ray crystallography as a
tool (for the most recent results see Vassylyev et al., Nature, 2007a,
448, pp. 157-162; Vassylyev et al., Nature, 2007b, 448, pp. 163-168).
More details on the lab research and organization are provided at the Web
site:http://138.26.140.2/vassylyev/index.html. A successful candidate
should have Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, or physics and
should demonstrate considerable expertise and record in protein structure
determination. Experience working with large macromolecular complexes,
weakly diffracting crystals, and crystals affected by perfect merohedral
twinning are of particular interest to this lab. Duties will include
crystallization, data collection and processing, structure determination
(using MR, MIR, MIRAS, MAD, SAD techniques), and refinement of the
transcription intermediates formed by prokaryotic RNA polymera ses during
the transcription cycle as well as the isolated transcription factors
regulating different phases of transcription. The knowledge and experience
in maintenance of the X-ray equipment, and experience in protein
expression, purification and/or crystallization are desirable, but are not
required. Compensation for this position is in accordance with NIH
postdoctoral pay scale and will be pro-rated for experience. This position
is available immediately until filled and offered initially for 1 year
with possibility of extension for up to 4 years pending sufficient
progress and productivity. To apply send a CV, letter of intent, names and
contact information of three referees to klyuyev@uab.edu.
