A senior scientist or postdoctoral fellow position will be available in
August 2007 in the Brinen lab in the department of Cellular and Molecular
Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco. The Brinen lab
is part of the UCSF Tropical Disease Research Unit, the UCSF Macromolecular
Structure Group, as well as the Sandler Center for Basic Research in
Parasitic Diseases. State of the art resources are available for all aspects
of X-ray crystallographic research, including ample synchrotron beam time at
both the Advanced Light Source (ALS) and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation
Laboratory (SSRL). Active research project areas include structure/function
of proteolytic enzymes key to the lifecycle of several parasitic organisms
responsible for infectious disease; structure-guided drug design against
targets in parasitic infection; the structure/function roles of proteases in
allergic response, protein-protein interactions in human lung biology and a
newly funded drug design project against kinases implicated in breast tumor
development and progression.

Requirements: Applicant must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biology,
biochemistry or a related field. Absolutely required are proven experience
in all aspects of macromolecular crystallography. Protein purification
experience is expected; molecular biology and enzymology experience
preferred. Experience using synchrotron light sources is a plus. Written and
spoken communication skills and the ability to work with an extended network
of collaborators are a must. Hiring at either the postdoctoral level or more
advanced professional scientist level will be considered.
